The monetary influence that freelancers had on the U.S. economy and workforce is estimated to be in the billions this year.

According to recent data published in Upwork Research Institute’s Freelance Forward 2023 survey, freelancers contributed a staggering $1.27 trillion to the U.S. economy in 2023 — marking a 78% increase since 2014. The survey, which included over 3,000 professionals, reveals the substantial economic contribution and growing importance of freelance work.

The age demographics of freelancers are also evolving and becoming more diverse, with a reported 52% of Gen Z and 44% of Millennial professionals engaging in freelance work. According to an analysis of the survey’s data published by Forbes, a substantial 13% of all U.S. freelancers are aged 59 or above.

The services offered by freelancers are also wide-ranging, with 47% reported to be providing knowledge services like computer programming, marketing, IT, and business consulting. Another 23% are involved in creating influencer-style content.

Over 85% of freelancers stated in the survey that “the best days are ahead for freelancing.” The data suggests that the rise in freelancers is due in part to the value placed on greater flexibility and control over one’s career. In fact, 80% of freelancers are optimistic about personal career growth and 76% are optimistic about their personal income and salary increases.

The sense of freedom inherent in freelance work opens the door for professionals to choose when, where, and for whom they work. However, this heightened independence also brings increased accountability and also leaves many professionals more susceptible to market changes that could either benefit or impact opportunities.

Companies are increasingly recognizing the strategic importance of integrating freelancers into their operations, as they allow for efficient scaling and access to specialized expertise. The growth of freelancing is an offshoot of a broader trend where flexibility, diversity of technical and creative skills, and market adaptability are key factors for success. This economic trend presents both opportunities and challenges for workers and employers alike.
